SPF Is Non-Negotiable: My Favourite Sunscreens That Actually Work (and Feel Good Too)
Let’s Be Real—SPF Isn’t Just for Beach Days
If there’s one step I never skip, it’s sunscreen. As an esthetician with breakout-prone skin, I’ve learned (the hard way) that daily SPF isn’t just for summer or sunny days. It’s a must for preserving your glow, protecting your barrier, and preventing premature aging, dark spots, and inflammation.
But finding the right sunscreen? That’s a journey. No one wants a greasy white cast, stinging eyes, or breakouts in the name of “protection.” After trying so many, these are my tried-and-true SPF faves that check all the boxes: clear, lightweight, breakout-safe, and actually enjoyable to wear.
1. Shiseido Clear Sunscreen Stick – On-the-Go Essential
This one lives in my bag. Purse, car, gym tote. Shiseido’s Clear Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+ is always with me. It glides on sheer, plays well with makeup, and never leaves residue. I love it for midday touch-ups, especially on the go. Bonus: it’s water-resistant and great for high-humidity or sweatier moments (hello, hot girl walks).
Pro tip: Reapply on the high points of your face—cheeks, nose, and forehead—especially if you’re out and about all day.
2. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid SPF – Lightweight & Reliable
La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 Ultra-Fluid is a cult classic for a reason. It’s thin like a serum, blends like a dream, and doesn’t feel heavy, perfect for oily and combination skin types like mine. It layers beautifully under makeup and has antioxidant protection, too.
This one is my morning go-to when I want a reliable base that doesn’t interfere with the rest of my routine.
3. EltaMD UV Clear – The Sensitive Skin Hero
If you’re acne-prone or reactive, EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 might be your new best friend. It’s formulated with niacinamide (a soothing anti-inflammatory), hyaluronic acid, and lactic acid—so it protects and calms your skin at the same time.
It comes in tinted and non-tinted options and works well under makeup or on bare skin. I love this one for days when my skin is feeling sensitive or post-treatment.
Bonus: It’s oil-free, fragrance-free, and recommended by so many derms and estheticians for good reason.
The Bottom Line: SPF is Skin Care, Not an Afterthought
Sunscreen is your skin’s daily armor. It prevents damage, calms inflammation, and supports all the other steps in your routine. Whether you’re dealing with breakouts, hyperpigmentation, or just want to keep your skin youthful and clear, SPF is a non-negotiable.
What works for my oily, breakout-prone skin may not be right for everyone. If you’re dry, sensitive, or darker-toned, the texture or tone of your SPF may matter more. Don’t be afraid to test a few and find your holy grail.
